anniversary reflection on Wiz Khalifa's Rolling Papers album.
2
:On this episode of Hip Hop Movie Club,
3
:we bury the paper thin storytelling of this documentary
4
:but praise how it reveals Wiz Khalifa's Pittsburgh pride
5
:his signature style
6
:and his kindred connection with none other than Snoop Dogg.
7
:I'm DynoWright, filmmaker, designer, longtime hip hop fan.
8
:I'm JB, 80s and 90s nostalgia junkie, longtime hip hop fan.
9
:I'm Boogie, a DJ, longtime hip hop fan.
10
:I didn’t
11
:find this documentary all that compelling.
12
:It's more like a 30 minute promotion for the album and the persona of Wiz Khalifa.
13
:I didn't really get any sign of conflict.
14
:he thought that “Black and Yellow” should be the single off his album, his first one for Atlantic.
15
:And people were saying, his manager was saying, this wasn't it, this wasn't it.
16
:But why?
17
:Yeah
18
:I kept asking why.
19
:Like I listened to the song.
20
:It's fine.
21
:Why wasn't this the lead single?
22
:I didn't get it.
23
:He stuck to his guns and said that it should be the single.
24
:And of course it went multi-platinum and the album went double platinum, but it just sort
of happened.
25
:tell me why you think this is it or it's not it.
26
:I can get something out of it.
27
:And I just felt this was just, for the people who love
28
:Wiz Khalifa, this is probably really great.
29
:But for those of us who coming into it pretty cold, I thought, okay.
30
:asking why a lot, like, okay, why?
31
:Why?
32
:I felt like a nine-year-old.
33
:Yeah, that's a great point though because now that you mention it, if they didn't want
Black and Yellow to be the lead single, what was the other song?
34
:What was the other song?
35
:Yeah, that's a good question because I'm like, yeah, what was the other song and why was
it?
36
:Yeah, right.
37
:have been "Cameras" or something.
38
:another thing that I wish I had seen more is this transition from Rostrum Records, his
hometown label, the sort of joint venture with Warner Brothers.
39
:And then he leaves that arrangement, goes on his own for a little while.
40
:And then he gets signed to Atlantic.
41
:They give it some lip service, but it was just sort of like, oh, it's happening.
42
:Why Atlantic?
43
:Why did Atlantic want him?
44
:You don't get any of this in a 30 minute documentary, but yeah, I wish I could have learned something substantial.
45
:Yeah, very good points, yeah.
46
:I called this “Still Rolling Promos”.
47
:Yeah.
48
:Yeah, he left something to be desired.
49
:It's kind of like it's a snapshot of some of the highlights of his career.
50
:And again, celebrating the Rolling Papers tour, which became a huge album for him that put
him on the map.
51
:I didn't come away from oh my God, Wiz, whatever.
52
:He had this crazy struggle and like you said, no conflict and it wasn't a big arc.
53
:was just like, yeah, he grinded.
54
:He's loyal.
55
:He's Pittsburgh dude.
56
:And the big thing about him is his Pittsburgh roots.
57
:So he was from Hazelwood PA right there in Pittsburgh.
58
:Some called him the Rocky Balboa of Pittsburgh.
59
:So the fact that he represents Pittsburgh.
60
:kind of cool.
61
:In fact his biggest hit that most people remember is “Black and Yellow” which was everywhere back when it came out.
62
:Which obviously the Pittsburgh sports teams you see is Pirates but the Steelers are known
as the black and yellow but I didn't realize really his car was black and yellow too and
63
:it was really a lot about his car as well.
64
:Yeah.
65
:One thing that I noticed that stood about him too was that he had a strong affinity for Chuck Taylors.
66
:And that was pretty cool.
67
:Like usually some people, they blow up and they start deviating from where they started
from.
68
:They change their style.
69
:They get these stylists that want create an image, but he wore Chuck Taylors.
70
:And not only did he wear Chuck Taylors, but he started collaborating with guys who also
wore Chuck Taylors.
71
:It's like they all were, had the same, pretty much the same fashion sense.
72
:they all kind of hung out together.
73
:Hence the start of the Taylor Gang.
74
:And that was pretty cool like you said, JB, that he had a loyalty to his friends and his
collaborators and they stuck together through it.
75
:Yeah.
76
:He's like, I don't spend any money on fancy shoes.
77
:I mean, I got to spend my money on my weed, my studio time and we're buying Chuck Taylor's
and yeah.
78
:You have to have priorities.
79
:He stuck to his priorities.
80
:And like I said, I love to see that tight knit crew.
81
:I like the little riffs they do on the Pittsburgh Pirates logos that they did in the
Taylor Gang and some of the
82
:the swag they had wearing and stuff.
83
:And then the Snoop Dogg connection, it's funny.
84
:Snoop said, my kids told me about Wiz and he said, I got to check out this kid.
85
:of course he related to him being the love of weed and stuff.
86
:And he said, I see Wiz as like a younger version of himself or reincarnation, so to speak
of, of me.
87
:I wish Dre produced him!
88
:What...can you imagine?
89
:Can you imagine some Dre production?
90
:Alright, you want to go around and rate this documentary?
91
:See what we have to say about it?
92
:Sure.
93
:Alright.
94
:So Boogie, for Still Rolling Papers, a Wiz Khalifa documentary, would you bring this funky
flick back or leave it in the vault?
95
:Hmm.
96
:Interesting.
97
:trying to figure out How I would rate this one.
98
:I enjoyed it, but at the same time, like DynoWright said, it didn't have that full...
99
:Like, I would watch a documentary on him, but I don't know if I would necessarily want to
watch this one again.
100
:I need a longer one.
101
:So for that, I probably will leave this one in the vault.
102
:All right, DynoWright, would you bring this funky flick back or leave it in the vault?
103
:for the fans of Wiz Khalifa, I'm sure it's fine, but I am leaving this in the vault.
104
:All right.
105
:I did take some tidbits away from it and ah I'm a PA guy myself and so I will bring this
funky flick back.
106
:I did laugh when he said the Rocky Balboa Pittsburgh.
107
:I was like, look at that.
108
:Being that Rocky Balboa's from Philly, he's like, what?
109
:He's like, wait a minute.
110
:I did see him wear an Eagles hat during this thing so I did notice that.
111
:Liberated fandom or at least he liked the colors.
112
:Thank you for tuning in to the Hip Hop Movie Club, the show for serious hip hop fans who
want to deepen their cultural knowledge.
113
:I'm DynoWright, filmmaker, designer, long time hip hop fan, and my go to order at
Primanti's is a pastrami and cheese.
114
:Love it.
115
:I'm JB, 80s and 90s nostalgia junkie, longtime hip hop fan.
116
:And I toured the city of Pittsburgh this past summer for the first time, enjoyed the many
murals, including those of the late Roberto Clemente and Mac Miller, both taken from us
117
:far too
118
:Yeah.
119
:And I'm Boogie, DJ, long time hip hop fan, and I've been to Pittsburgh only once.
120
:And that was for a layover on my way to Indianapolis.
121
:Long story short, I need to visit ASAP.
122
:A-S-A-P, I need to go.
123
:Great city.
124
:Fun city.
125
:Really fun.
126
:And remember, don't hallucinate.
127
:Whoa, okay.
128
:Now, I don't know I'm saying.
129
:Just go up and smoke or like a AI hallucinate.
130
:I don't know, but sometimes you just gotta, sometimes you just gotta step out of the,
atmosphere, by whatever means.
131
:Yeah, exactly.
132
:Haven't used that one before, we had to throw it in there.
133
:That's good.
134
:These days.
